The College of Chemistry originates from the former Department of Chemistry at Fuzhou University. The Department of Chemistry, one of the earliest departments at Fuzhou University, was founded by the famous chemist Mr. Lu Jiaxi (former Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress; President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) when Fuzhou University was first established in 1958. In 1961, the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical Engineering (founded at the same time) were merged to form the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, which was divided into the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical Engineering later in 1984. In May 2001, the two departments got reunited to form the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. In March 2014, the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was once again separated into the College of Chemistry and the College of Petroleum Chemical Engineering.
Up to now, the College of Chemistry has set up 6 teaching units according to the second-level discipline: Department of Inorganic Chemistry, Department of Organic Chemistry, Department of Physical Chemistry, Department of Analytic Chemistry, Department of Chemical Biology & Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Experimental Teaching Center. And according to research fields, it has already formed 13 research teams at national, provincial, ministerial, university, or college levels respectively including the State Key Laboratory of Photocatalysis on Energy & Environment, Key Laboratory of Food Security Analysis & Detection supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE), and Fujian Provincial Functional Materials Research Center.
The College of Chemistry features a strong teaching faculty of 156 members, of which 56 are full professors, 51 are associate professors, 2 have been selected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 professors have obtained the national “Thousand Talents Program” for Distinguished Professors, 1 professor has been selected as the Changjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, 2 professors have been awarded the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Youth Scholars, 1 professor has been selected into the National “Hundred-thousand-ten thousand Talents Project”, 10 have been awarded Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professors by the Fujian Provincial Government, Besides, more than 10 are professors with joint appointment or adjunct professors. It is worth mentioning that 1 teacher has been awarded the title of “Experts with National-level Contributions”; 6 teachers have been granted the Special Allowance from the State Council; and 1 teacher has won the honor of Outstanding Teachers in Fujian Province.
The College of Chemistry at Fuzhou University features excellent teaching conditions, which has 1 National Basic Scientific Research & Teaching Talent Cultivation Base(Chemistry), 1 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering), 2 MOE Special Disciplinary Construction Posts (Chemistry), 1 Mode Innovation Experiment Zone for Talent Cultivation in Fujian Province, and 3 Graduate Student Innovation Education Research Bases in Fujian Province (Physical Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, and Industrial Catalysis). There are 1 National Fine Course with Resources to Share (Structural Chemistry), 1 National Fine Course (Structural Chemistry), 1 Provincial Fine Course (Structural Chemistry), 1 National-level Teaching Team (National Chemical Science Base Teaching Team), and 1 Talent Joint Cultivation Base in cooperation with Fijian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The College of Chemistry recruits undergraduate students nationwide in both Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering. Currently there are more than 600 undergraduate students in the College.
The College of Chemistry at Fuzhou University provides a fine platform for talent cultivation. It has doctor's degree and master's degree conferring posts for the first-level discipline of Chemistry, covering 8 second-level doctor's and master's degree conferring posts in Physical Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, High Polymer Chemistry and Physics, Environmental Chemistry, Material Chemistry, Food Security and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, 2 subordinate second-level disciplines with doctor’s degree conferring posts (Applied Chemistry and Biochemical Engineering) under the first-level discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology. It has a second-level discipline of Pharmaceutical Analysis with a doctor's degree conferring post under the first-level discipline of Pharmacy, and a first-level discipline of Pharmacy with 4 second-level disciplines with master's degree conferring posts, namely, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, and Pharmaceutics. It has Material Physics and Chemistry master's degree conferring post under the first-level discipline of Material Science and Engineering. It also offers full-time professional master's degree conferring post in Pharmaceutical Engineering, engineering master's degree conferring post in the field of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and post-doctoral flowing scientific research stations in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, covering research areas like Physical Chemistry, Materials and Inorganic Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry and Food Security, Pharmacy, Energy and Environmental Chemical Engineering, and Industrial Catalysis. There are now in the College more than 560 master students, more than 150 PhD Students, and more than 20 post-doctoral researchers in joint programs. Every year, 250 master students and about 50 doctoral students in both science and engineering are recruited from both home and abroad.
The College of Chemistry has advanced scientific research platforms with 2 at national level: State Key Laboratory of Photocatalysis on Energy & Environment and National Engineering and Technological Research Center of Environment Photocatalysis. There are some other ministerial or provincial platforms for scientific research like the MOE Key Laboratory of Food Security Analysis & Detection, Fujian Provincial Photocatalytic Engineering Research Center, Fujian Provincial Functional Material Engineering Research Center, Fujian Provincial Photodynamic Therapy Medicine and Treatment Engineering Technological Research Center, Fujian Provincial Product Quality and Food Security Testing Reagents and Instrument Engineering and Technological Research Center, Fujian Provincial Functional Materials Technological Development Base, and Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Solid Material Chemistry. The discipline of Physical Chemistry in the College of Chemistry is a national key discipline. The Basic Research and Applications of Condensed State Physical Chemistry has been selected as a key discipline for the state “211 Project” construction. The Innovation Platform of Environment Photocatalysis is one with a preponderant discipline at universities in Fujian Province. The first-level disciplines of Chemistry and Pharmacy are key disciplines in Fujian Province. It has a Key Fields Innovation Team (Photocatalysis) for the Innovation Talent Promotion Plan supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and 2 Scientific Research Innovation Teams supported by the Ministry of Education: Foundation & Applications of Photocatalysis and Food Security Analysis & Detection and Sensing Technology. The College is featured by scientific researches in various disciplines and fields, such as Physical Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, Material Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
