The Experimental Chemistry Center of Fuzhou University (hereinafter referred to as the "Center"), established in May 2001, was first named the Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in 2005. The Center was selected into the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (the construction unit) in 2007, and finally passed the examination in 2012. The Center owns a building specially used for the experimental teaching. The total area of all the laboratories in the building amounts to 8,190 square meters. Currently, More than 80 sets of large and medium-sized instruments have been equipped in the lab building, with a total value of nearly RMB 20 million.
The main task of the Center is to carry out chemical experiment teaching and to do the teaching research. Every year, the Center would offer 59 different courses on chemical experiment for the undergraduates of 17 different majors. Among the 59 courses, 1 was approved as a National Essential Course, 2 were Provincial Essential Courses, and 4 were top-quality courses of Fuzhou University. According to the statistics, every year, over 3800 students take the lessons in the Center. And, the number turns up to 180,000 by multiplied with the number of the students and their experimental hours.
The Center has made great efforts to optimize the teams of the faculty in recent years with tremendous fruits. There are 37 teachers in total, 17 experimental technicians, of which 15 with senior professional titles, 16 with doctor’s degrees and 7 with master’s degrees. The experimental teachers have been openly recruited from the College of Chemistry. Some Minjiang Scholars and young fellows with great achievements in research also participate in the experimental teaching.
Currently, the College of Chemistry is devoting itself to the goal of building a high-level university and high-level research-oriented college in accordance with the FZU mission of taking a road of building a first-class university with regional characteristics and priorities given to entrepreneurship. The Center will take the opportunity to deepen the reform in the experimental teaching, improve the laboratory conditions, and improve students’ abilities in comprehensive application and innovation quality of scientific research, thus laying a solid foundation for further participation in scientific research for students.
