The Research Institute of Photocatalysis at Fuzhou University (hereinafter referred to as the "Institute") was set up in 1997, which consists of the National Engineering Center of Environmental Photocatalysis and the State Key Laboratory of Photocatalysis on Energy and Environment. The Institute focuses on the fundamental research on photocatalysis, R&D of photocatalytic-related products and technologies, and the industrialization of photocatalytic technologies. It is one of the best and the most influential research centers on photocatalysis inChina. The Institute, headed by Professor Fu Xianzhi, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, comprises of an innovative research team of about 40 famous researchers (including 30 full professors) in related fields. The research team was selected as the Innovative Research Team in University by the Ministry of Education in 2009 and the Innovative Research Team in Priority Research Area (Energy and Environment) by Ministry of Science and Technology. It was also awarded the “National Advanced Groups of Technical Manpower” in 2014. The Institute is equipped with a research building with a total area of about 6,000 square meters, and facilities with a total value of about 30 million Yuan. The current research areas of the Institute include photocatalytic water-splitting, environmental remediation, solar cells and photocatalytic applications in several important fields.

During the past decade, the Institute has undertaken national and provincial key research projects including the 973 Project, the 863 Program, the Chinese National Programs for Science and Technology Development, Project Supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, State Key Program of National Natural Science of China as well several big applied research projects in cooperation with the army and companies. More than 400 papers have been published and 50 patents have been authorized. The Institute has won 1 Second Prize of State Science and Technology Advances Awards, 1 First Prize of Military Science and Technology Advances Awards, and 3 First Prize of Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Advances Awards.
